Top  Tips

OK so in a moment of inspiration a brilliant new idea came into your head.  Maybe you were in the garden, driving even, taking the kids to school.   Any successful inventor will tell you this is how it really happens, just casually one day and there it is in your head.

If you really want to succeed with your new idea and invention please read on.  We have put together a few tips and advice to help you along the way.

1. OK so you have has a brilliant idea.  Stand back and look at it rationally, but not to critical. Is it  a good idea.

2. Consider if it will sell to others once developed into a product.  It will have no future if a funder cannot see any market potential

3. Put together a few drawings and ideas on paper.  Always keep a portfolio of these

Tip- post a copy of all drawings etc to yourself using registered mail.  Do not ever open this envelope.  This will provide evidence that this was your original idea and date confirmed

4. If you can make a non working mock up model from anything  you can find which will demonstrate your invention in principal ,

does it work? test it if you can

5. Stand back again and review your idea, show it to friends and family see what they think. warning, do not get to obsessed with your idea so as to be blinkered and plough on regardless of opinion. Many inventors have spent thousands of pounds and hours, mortgaged their property pursuing an idea which was doomed from the start.

6. If you can try to protect your ideas with patents and copyrights, see free patent advice,  at this stage, see our main  home pages for detailed information on how to do this with professional help.

7. Once you have copyrights and patents in place you are now ready to go public and  to seek financial and market partners to produce your invention.See our main page for contacts to progress your idea with a partner. You will find all types of business partner contacts who will come in at all stages

8. Top Tip !  It is not always best to try to manufacture your invention from scratch.  Think about manufacturing with an established manufacturer. Or consider simply lincensing your idea to a partner company  and collect royalties from sales.  The latter is by far the most easiest and workable for most people and will in most cases bring your product to market earlier.

You could,

* Finance develop and sell your idea on your own using your own finance and manufacturing base, or have someone to manufacture for you.

* Find a partner who may have finance, business experience or retail contacts to access to your markets.  You will  probably have to give away some equity in exchange for a financial input from your partner.

* You could sell your idea outright for a lump sum.

* You could agree to licence your idea to a maufacturer in return for a share of its sales income, usually called a Royalty.
